Jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 With IPSW Semi-Untethered, Tethered Using Redsn0w 0.9.9b8

The iPhone Dev Team has released redsn0w 0.9.9b8. The latest version of redsn0w allows you to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 firmware semi-untethered and tethered on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, using its own IPSW.

We've already reported that it is possible to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 firmware using the previous version of redsn0w released to jailbreak iOS 5 final. While a redsn0w update was not immediately needed to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1, it did require you to point to the iOS 5 public IPSW for jailbreaking iOS 5.0.1. Now with redsn0w 0.9.9b8, that hassle or trick has been eliminated.

Earlier today Apple seeded iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to registered developers. If you're not a registered developer, here's how to install iOS 5.0.1 without developer account. It is expected that iOS 5.0.1 will be released to public in the next couple of weeks. This update does not bring any new features, however it does come with a couple of crucial bug fixes, including the fix for iPhone 4S battery issue. Apple has also made some performance improvements as well as upped the ante on security.

Before you jailbreak iOS 5.0.1, keep the following things in mind:

  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 only applies a tethered jailbreak
  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b8 can not jailbreak iPhone 4S and iPad 2
  • You will manually need to download and provide iOS 5.0.1 IPSW to redsn0w because at the moment this firmware is not publicly available. You can download iOS 5.0.1 IPSW from the link given at the end of this post.

After you have downloaded iOS 5.0.1 IPSW, launch redsn0w 0.9.9b8 on your Windows or Mac computer and click on Extras followed by Select IPSW. Now select the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW for your device that you have previously downloaded. Full instructions on how to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 using redsn0w are given here.

Once again, keep in mind that this is a tethered jailbreak. You will have to connect your device to the computer in order to boot it tethered. A tethered boot is required by a tethered-jailbroken device because without it Cydia, jailbreak tweaks and a number of native iOS apps can't work. An untethered jailbreak is devoid of all such hassles. Nevertheless, you can get an iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak of sorts.
