iOS 4.3.5 Tethered iPhone, iPad, iPod touch Jailbreak / Boot Using Redsn0w [Tutorial]

Ads

A few hours back, Apple released iOS 4.3.5 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. We mentioned that devices susceptible to the Limera1n bootrom exploit will be able to be jailbroken on iOS 4.3.5. Following is the guide on how to jailbreak iOS 4.3.5 on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch using redsn0w.

Prominent member of the iPhone Dev Team, MuscleNerd has also confirmed that it is indeed possible to jailbreak iOS 4.3.5. It is going to be a tethered jailbreak, meaning that whenever it is required for you to reboot  your device, it has to been connected to the computer for a tethered boot. Otherwise, it will just get stuck on the Apple logo and won't boot up until and unless you boot tethered using a computer and the very same redsn0w software you used to jailbreak it. So the files that you download for the jailbreak are to be kept safe as those very same files, the iOS 4.3.5 ipsw and redsn0w for your Windows or Mac machine, will also be used to boot tethered. Keep in mind that this procedure does not work on the iPad 2.

A word of advice for our friends who rely on a software unlock for their iPhones. You must not, we repeat, must not upgrade to iOS 4.3.5 or even iOS 4.3.4 for that matter. Your baseband will be upgraded and you shall not be able to use cellular services on iOS 4.3.5. Stay away from stock firmware.

Jailbreak iOS 4.3.5 Tethered on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch:

Step 1: Download both iOS 4.3.4 and iOS 4.3.5 ipsw for your iDevice. You will need the iOS 4.3.4 ipsw.

Step 2: Download the latest public version of iTunes, followed by downloading the recently released redsn0w 0.9.8 beta 4 for both Windows and Mac.

Step 3: Extract the redsn0w folder. Launch redsn0w on your computer. If you are running Windows 7 or Vista, make sure to do the following procedure before you run redsn0w.

  • Right click on redsn0w.exe and click on Properties
  • Go to the Compatibility tab
  • Check Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows XP Service Pack 3 from the drop down menu
  • Check Run this program as an administrator down in the Privilege Level.
  • Click Apply followed by Ok
Step 4: Once redsn0w loads up. Browse for the iOS 4.3.4 ipsw that you previously downloaded. Yes, to jailbreak iOS 4.3.5, you need to point redsn0w to iOS 4.3.4 ipsw.
Step 5: Redsn0w now begins to identify the ipsw. Once done, it takes you to a screen where you have several boxes to check. First and foremost, check Install Cydia. You may also choose to enable Battery Percentage and Multitasking Gestures.
Step 6: Upon clicking next, redsn0w now instructs you to power off your device and connect it to the computer. From here when you click next, it will show instructions on how to put your device in DFU mode. Follow these instructions carefully:
  • Press and hold the Power button for around three seconds
  • Press and hold both the Power and Home buttons for up to 10 seconds
  • Release Power button but keep on holding Home button until redsn0w starts injecting the Limera1n bootrom exploit.
Step 7: Once the device is in DFU mode, leave it up to redsn0w to work its magic. Sit back and watch redsn0w jailbreak iOS 4.3.5 on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Boot iOS 4.3.5 tethered after jailbreak:
Step 1: So once you have successfully done the jailbreak, you need to boot your freshly jailbroken device tethered. Connect it to your computer and power it off.
Step 2: Launch redsn0w once again and select the iOS 4.3.4 ipsw.
Step 3: Uncheck Install Cydia and any other options you may have previously checked. Now only check Just boot tethered right now.
Step 4: Follow the above mentioned instructions to put your device in DFU mode.
Step 5: If the instructions have been followed as they are meant to be, you'll see redsn0w starts to work on its on again. At this moment, your device shall be displaying a pineapple in place of the Apple logo that appears at start up. Within 2 minutes, your device will be fully booted, tethered on jailbroken iOS 4.3.5.

Are you ever able to reboot untethered after it is jail broken?

      • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

        No, only tethered boot.

  • Gogz

It is going to be a tethered jailbreak, meaning that whenever it is required for you to reboot your device, it has to been connected to the computer for a tethered boot. Otherwise, it will just get stuck on the Apple logo and won’t boot up until and unless you boot tethered using a computer and the very same redsn0w software you used to jailbreak it…

And again “meaning that whenever it is required for you to reboot your device, it has to been connected to the computer”

You open the 4.3.4 ipsw through redsn0w, even though you are running 4.3.5.
Trust me, it works. The exploit for 4.3.5 is identical to that of 4.3.4 so you can jailbreak 4.3.5 through 4.3.4

  • fahad azhar

  • Izzatistar

What a mistake to update to 4.3.5. Can we downgrade back 4.3.3?

Will I loose anything when I upgrade from 4.3.3 to 4.3.5?
Do I have to install all my Cydia store apps and data?
I use OKGBackup, should that be enough or…

    • akatzbreaker

no it shouldn’t because redsn0w doesn’t restore the device with the selected .ipsw but it identifies the exploit and starts exploiting the device with the exploit made for that firmware…
This means that if the hole of the previous firmware isn’t closed yet it is vulnerable with the same exploit.

It’s just for saving time (for the redsn0w programmers)….

      • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

        Exactly. Well put.

  • Stijn

Yes if you update your iPhone or iPod or iPad you have to jailbreak your iPod phone or pad again. I’ve got THE Same problem but if you have 4.3.3 you better dont update because with 4.3.5 you dont have a tethered jailbreak. It’s to late for me. But you can search on YouTube how to downgrade.

make sure you’re using 4.3.4 even though the firmware already on ur phone is 4.3.5

    • Ingpugalde

The problem is in how you saved the file.
1 – You must save as
2 – You must add the file name followed by the extension. Ipsw
3 – Ready, look for the firmware with redsn0w.

  • guest

Can anyone tell me why you need to download the 4.3.5 ipsw?.. As I was reading through the guide it doesnt say any steps that involve it.

    • bez

Yeah, that was a little confusing initially, until I realized the logic behind it… there should probably be an explicit mention of this for relative noobs like myself.

I didn’t use the DL from step one – just updated via iTunes to 4.3.5 (from 4.2.1), then followed the rest of the jailbreak. Worked well for me.

      • bez

Also noticed that more recent versions of redsnow (rc16, 18) won’t recognize the ipsws… make sure to use the one specified above (0.9.8b4).

No. To jailbreak iOS 4.3.5, you have to point it to the iOS 4.3.4 ipsw.

  • Sitalkajee

I jailbroke my phone for the first time last week on 4.3.3 firmware and could not believe i had waited that long to do it – total iphone heaven……until i downloaded something dodgy and had to restore my phone. During the restore process, itunes upgraded my firmware to 4.3.5 – i was of course SCREWING! I then spent the rest of the night trying to downgrade it to 4.3.3 without any success. After a day of normal iphone, i decided a tethered jailbreak would be better than the restriction placed by apple so yesterday i followed your instructions and did a tethered jailbreak. It has worked perfectly fine AND somehow it lets me download cydia apps that require a reboot without having to connect it to redsnow – RESULT! Or have i done something wrong???

    • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

To use Cydia again, you have to boot tethered.

Looks like you have a buggy installation. You’ll need to reinstall the firmware on your iPod and then jailbreak it again.

wel twhat u gotta do is to put ur iphone into DFU mode then open redsnow select ur ipsw firmware uncheck the option install cydia only select the option just boot tethered right now then click next after that ur phone supposed to load the redsnow codes and it must turn on it happened to me many times when my phone got stucked in apple logo or when my battery drained till it shut off byitself

it wont open the rar file as a ipsw

I think the main problem everyone is having with a iphone 4 with 4.3.5 update loaded is that downloading the Download iOS 4.3.5 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch in internet explorer fucks it right up. You will need to download it in fire fox internet explorer does not let you download it as a .ipsw file and it does not work. START again and downlod everything with fire fox and it’s simple as pie. took me forever to do.

  • matt

It has worked once for me.. Successful tethered jailbreak..

When I plug it in to the computer, I can hear the usb device detected sound, but when i use redsnow, nothing appears.
Just yesterday, when I used redsnow, some commands showed on my iPod touch, together with the jailbreak loading screen. But today, there’s absolutely nothing, not even a white screen when it says reboot succeeded.

Try doing a clean firmware restore on your device. Just connect it to the computer, launch iTunes and restore the firmware.

once i get cydia and i have to download anything for example winterboard, after all the codes come out it says reboot device , but then it gets stuck and nothing happens and i have to restore everything again . Please help.

so i have the same problem as others and so far no one seems to have addressed it and their questions are dodged…
    JB’d just fine.
Installed a JB app thru Cydia and the install rebooted the device.
Now it is stuck on the apple logo screen.
*MAIN PROBLEM* :: Cant turn it off to tether and boot w/redsn0w.
anyone have the solution? how do i turn off my phone now?

i tried holding down the power button with the home button and it seems to turn off, but it reboots again. tried to time this and do it while launching redsn0w and the teethered boot option. the DFU mode steps started up and redsn0w proceeded…thought it worked, but after the progress bar fills up, redsn0w doesnt complete and the phone stays on the apple logo.

it’s happen to me too WITH MY IPAD!!!!!

Deadass, i looked all over the place i think the only solution is to stay away from 4.3.5 and stick to either 4.3.4 or 4.3.3 like me. 4.3.5 is just dishing out problems for everyone when 5.0 is coming out soon

  • Bluskyline21

    flawless. Thanks!

I am a newbie, and followed all the instructions and it worked perfectly apart from when I plug in my Vodafone UK Sim it says Network Not Available. I have tried to reset Network which involves a reboot but still no luck…please help!

make sure you’re using latest version of redsn0w.

redsn0w’d my 4.3.5 iPhone 4 with IPSW 4.3.4. Jailbreak went fine. After doing a tethered boot, I can get to the pineapple logo…which turns into an apple logo…which winds up back in recovery mode. Help?

    4.3.5 Firmware jailbreaking concerns:

    1) My iPad 1 was updated by accident when it was connected to iTunes (Beware although iTunes asks you to update your device’s iOS). This iPad wasn’t jailbroken before; it was my first jailbreak on this particular device but it was not my first time jailbreaking apple products.

    2) DFU using the
    a) traditional Redsn0w method where you turn the device off, on, hold both buttons together, and then release power/sleep button but remain holding the home button until Redsn0w responds,
    b) download iReb-r4 and used DFU helper
    c) download iFaith v.1.3.2 and used DFU Pwner

    3) I tried using both Mac & Windows to perform a jailbreak on my iPad 1 using Redsn0w 0.9.8b4.

    4) Download 4.3.4 & 4.3.5 firmwares using more than one site (i.e., redmondpie, iphone-dev, etc). The purpose was to validate that the issue wasn’t because of the firmware.

Followed through this “jailbreaking” process meticulously, which i have done it numerous times and have never had a single issue. And maybe it was because untethered. But since 4.3.5 iOS only supports and maybe the process is “tethered,” my device has not been working properly.

For example, Redsn0w installs without any issue. Once the 1st phase (initial install) finishes, you now have to restart your device manually. You hold down the slee/power button and slide off so that you can turn the device off, thus you will have to set your device to DFU mode in order for you to choose “Just boot tethered now” option. No other check mark should be on, only the boot tethered option. The 2nd phase finishes and instead of apple logo you will immediately see a pineapple logo. Wait around for a minute and you now have a tethered, jailbroken iPad.

Now, here is the biggest issue that I’m having. Let say I want to restart my device manually (holding down a power/sleep button), or an app that requires a reboot (in Cydia when you have to install a certain app such as iBossPref or adding sources such as iclarified), the device turns off and the screen stays in apple logo forever. Nothing happens. It won’t turn off and nothing happens. When you hold down power/sleep button and the home button together, unpleasant surprise of “device connect to iTunes” screen pops up or it simply doesn’t work. i then connect my device to iTunes and i have to start from the beginning all over again – by selecting “restore” option in iTunes, let iTunes update 4.3.5 all over again and go through the steps.

Am I missing something here? Is it because tethered and not untethered? Reboot equals death when it comes to tethered devices.

It’s quite interesting too because one time I restarted my iPad and had no problem coming back to the lock screen. i tried opening up Cydia and of course it didn’t work; it needed the device to be connected to a computer and needed to follow through a boot tethered now option. So put the device into DFU mode and Redsn0w gave me an error and it didn’t complete the “boot tethered.”

So, I have been wrestling an entire day over this. What is the best solution to fix this “restarting” issue with tethered jailbreak devices?

    • http://www.iphoneism.com Lota Man

When the device gets stuck at the Apple boot logo at restart, that is when you have to boot it tethered using redsn0w. Simply follow the procedure to boot tethered and your iPad 1 will function perfectly regardless of a tethered jailbreak.

is there anyway to boot untethered? is really annoying, the only way i figured was restoring my ipod touch 4g to 4.3.3 and jailbreak it with old redsn0w, but guess what? itunes wont restore it to that version, im stuck with 4.3.5 jailbroken tethered… please help?

    • Jerizzy55

Just download iOS 4.3.4 ipsw and jailbreak on your iOS 4.3.5 iDevice.
But you should click “tethered” every time you reboot your device.
    HAPPY JAILBREAKING!!

    • Anna

Help please – this all started when I deleted a program in cydia and made my iPhone4 not be able to use cydia again. So decided to re-jailbreak my phone (which initially someone else did this for me).
Installed redsnow (and 4.3 Ipsw) before I did this I checked to see which platform version I was running (4.2) thought that 4.3,2 was close enough NOT because I am stuck in boot logo limbo.
Btw I did get it to work because the first time I downloaded a program from cydia worked to the point (before this my devise use to just respiring automatically) I realized after the fact that it could only reboot by now only computer tethering but to late by this time panicked did a full factory restore and NOW stuck in this boot logo and a non working iPhone !!!!!
Please h please help don’t know here to get help!

okay i dont know if anyone pays attention to the comment list but i did this and it was all working fine. i could even respring without rebooting when i just changed my themes. but when it did need a reboot, i wasnt by a computer so i couldnt do it. my ipod is dead and i cant tell if its accepting a charge, so i cant do it. or it might just be that i dont have the 4.3.5 downloaded, because i didnt think that was necisary because i was already running it. btw im doing this on two separte computers

I’m having a problem, I jailbroke my 4.3.5 with 4.3.3 ipws. and I’ve had it hacked for like 2 weeks and I decided to uninstall a tweak from Cydia and I guess it wanted to respring but it got stuck there so I tried to put it in DFU mode so I can “turn it on” again, though it basically wasn’t turned off. But now after I do the steps it gets stuck in the pineapple and nothing happens. Is there a way to get passed the pineapple or do I have to restore :/?
